California: Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act put into practice Featured

Starting this month, the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, passed in 2018, prohibits the sale of cosmetics tested on animals.

The new law prohibits the sale of both cosmetics and ingredients tested on animals after 2020. There are certain narrow exemptions in the legislation, such as for animal testing prescribed from a regulatory authority in another country or for ingredients used for non-cosmetic purposes in addition to cosmetic purposes, for which animal testing is sometimes required by regulatory authorities such as the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States.

In 2013, the European Union had banned animal testing for the production and marketing of cosmetics in the EU. Since then, Norway, Switzerland, Israel, Turkey, India, Guatemala, Taiwan and New Zealand have also banned testing or marketing of cosmetics tested on animals.
