EPA: Reduction of experiments with birds to test pesticides Featured

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken a further step to ensure, in accordance with its new directive, to further reduce animal testing. Animal testing on birds will be reduced if enough other information is available to safely register outdoor pesticides.

For the safety assessment of outdoor pesticides, up to four separate bird feeding studies have been conducted so far (Sub-Acute Avian Dietary Tests). Some of these tests are now waived if the authority has sufficient information to ensure that a pesticide registration is also possible without the tests.

With the decision, the number of tested birds can be reduced by about 720 birds per year.
