Lübeck: Animal-free Safety Tests for Contact Lenses Featured

The young company Nandatec from Lübeck is conducting tests on contact lenses without the use of rabbits. Therefore, human eye tissue is first printed on the 3D printer and then equipped with the contact lens.


Biochemist Dagmar Schneider is CEO of Nandatec, a company that is specialized in the production, synthesis and surface modification of biocompatible nanoparticles for science and medical application. One focus is on animal-free testing of medical devices, in this case, contact lenses, according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 10993-5, in which cytotoxicity tests with human cells can be conducted instead of rabbit eyes.
