Tissue from space shall replace animal experiments Featured

Researchers at the UZH Space Hub of the University of Zurich, led by Prof. Oliver Ullrich and Dr. Cora Thiel are presently cultivating human tissue from adult stem cells on the ISS space station. The researchers are using the weightlessness to produce better transplants as well as tissues, that could avoid animal testing.

During the one-month stay in space, adult stem cells are to be developed stem cells into bone tissue,  cartilage, and other organs. The background is that physical forces like gravity influence how stem cells differentiate and how the formation and regeneration of tissue are organized. The researchers assume that due to the low gravity on board the ISS
the newly formed cells are able to organize themselves three-dimensional without matrix and additional auxiliary structures.
