South Korea: On the Road to a Contemporary Risk Assessment Featured

OECD member South Korea is currently considering a legislative proposal that would require ministries of regulation and research funding ministries to promote the development and use of non-animal non-animal methods.

Internationally recognized non-animal methods are neither promoted by the government nor adopted by industry in South Korea, and many laboratories simply ignore them, even though the country is a member of the OECD. In 2019, 3,712,380 animals used in South Korea with an alarming increase of 187% in animal testing for insecticide testing and a 115% increase in animal testing for industrial chemicals.

The bill now being proposed to promote the development, dissemination, and use of alternatives to animal testing methods would give priority to human-specific technologies to modernize and improve human health research and product safety testing.
