EPO: No patent on genetically modified vertebrates Featured

Testbiotech has achieved an important success in appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO):  A patent held by the Max Planck Society will be amended to delete all claims to genetically modified vertebrates.

Originally, the patent claimed many genetically modified animal species, from mice to great apes. These animals are to be genetically engineered for experimental purposes so that they develop symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Ethical reasons were decisive for the EPO's current decision. According to the expected animal suffering is not offset by any proven substantial medical benefit as required by the rules of European patent law.
