USA: Kidney tissue from the 3D printer Featured

San Diego-based startup Trestle Biotherapeutics has been licensed by Harvard's Office of Technology Development (OTD) to commercialize a suite of stem cell and 3D bioprinting-based regenerative kidney medicine technologies developed at the Harvard Wyss Institute, Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (Brigham).


The lack of transplantable kidney tissues and whole organs is a huge challenge in treating chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.

To solve the problem, Jennifer Lewis, Sc.D., director of the Organ Engineering Initiative and core faculty member of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, with her team recently developed a new bioproduction method known as sacrificial writing in functional tissue (SWIFT). These methods can be used to produce vascularized kidney tissue. San Diego-based Trestle Biotherapeutics will now implement this technology to meet the growing demand for kidney tissue and organs.
