US House of Representatives: Amendment to FDA Modernization Act will save animals Featured

The U.S. House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed the FDA Modernization Act as an amendment to a larger package of FDA-related reforms that could prevent millions of animal tests in the coming years and provide safer and more effective medicines to countless patients in need of treatment.

Under the FDA Modernization Act of 2021, an applicant for marketing approval of a new drug may use methods other than animal testing to demonstrate the drug's safety and effectiveness, see https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2565

Hopes now rest on a similar process in the U.S. Senate in the coming months.

This represents the next major step toward phasing out animal testing, following the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2020 work plan to gradually reduce animal testing for chemical risk assessment.
