Maryland advocates for alternatives to medical research on animals Featured

Earlier this month, the Maryland state legislature passed a bill requiring animal-testing companies and universities to pay into a new fund dedicated to promoting alternative research approaches.

A state agency will then use these funds to award grants to support alternative biomedical research efforts such as cell-based testing and computer modeling. However, the bill does not include a complete ban on animal testing.

In another matter, German animal rights organizations had already unsuccessfully called for the establishment of a so-called mouse penny decades ago. The background was that institutions conducting animal experiments were handing over laboratory animals that were no longer needed to private owners without contributing to the costs of care.
