Call for submission: EPAA SCIENCE AWARD 2012

The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA), a cooperation between the European Commission and industry from various sectors, is organising for the second time its Science Award, worth up to 100 000 €.

As a first graduate of the MSc course "miniaturized biotechnology", offered by the Department of Mediocal Technology and Biotechnology of the University of Applied Sciences Jena, in her final studies a student developed a new method for microfluidic cultivation of cells.

American scientists headed by Janet Tse at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge exposed different breast cancer cell lines to different pressures. They found out that these breast cancer cells penetrate into surrounding healthy tissue and can therefore promote the spread of cancer.

Stem cells detected in the retina

American scientists have detected a previously unknown type of stem cells in the retina of the human eye.

Each year the Körber Foundation presents the German Thesis Award for the year’s most important dissertations. Applications can be submitted until 1 March 2012.

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Modular Solid State Technologies (EMFT), Munich, have developed a new approach using sensor nanoparticles for the purpose of testing the effects and potential risks of substances in cell cultures.

Bioinformatics scientists led by Johannes Söding from the Gene Center of University of Munich (LMU) have developed new software which can recognize related proteins especially rapidly and precisely. The software can help to predict the properties of proteins more precisely than before.

At the award ceremony for the animal welfare research award 2011 presented by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, InVitroJobs spoke with Dr. Hendrik Reuter, one of the award recipients and head of the department “Experimental Toxicology” at Beiersdorf AG.

A meeting took place recently in London between the ECEAE (European Coalition to End Animal Experiments) and executives from Allergan, the leading manufacturer of botulinum toxin products. It was held to discuss the significant progress made by Allergan towards ending the use of animals for the commercial release of BOTOX products.

The Life & Brain research centre led by the stem cell researcher Prof. Dr. Oliver Brüstle from Bonn, Germany, and the German Centre for Neurogenerative Diseases (DZNE) have successfully applied in vitro methods with the help of induced pluripotent stem cells to unlock the secret to the Machado-Joseph disease, a hereditary movement coordination disorder.
