In vitro research on respiratory tract infections Featured

The Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM) is one of 11 partners in the European PneumoNP project and will contribute to research with in vitro studies.

The goal of the European PneumoNP project is to develop a theragnostic system for the treatment of pneumonia with gram-negative bacteria. The focus is on the bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae, which can cause so-called Friedländer pneumonia in persons with weakened immune systems. Theragnostic systems are diagnostic systems with an integrated therapy. The ultimate goal is to be able to use inhalable nano-therapeutics to treat antibiotic-resistant respiratory infections, based on a combination of nanocarriers coupled to new antibiotics.

The EU project will be funded for 4 years and unites research institutes, universities, hospitals and business ventures from 6 European Member States. It is supported by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme with 5.7 million euros.
