European Stem Cells Bank for Research Featured

A central Stem Cell Bank at European level is the ambitious goal of the new joint project named Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI). In this bank induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) are centrally stored. Scientists and industry can use them for disease research and the development of therapies against neurodegenerative diseases.

The collaborative project is supported with 35 million euros from the European Union. 26 organizations have joined together: universities and research institutions as well as research-based pharmaceutical companies and small and medium-sized companies.

More and more iPS cells are produced in European research programs, but so far no systematic cataloging exist. The new "European Bank for induced pluripotent stem cells" (EBiSC) should create an uniform quality and systematisation for the use in research.

In about three years universities and pharmaceutical companies can order the first cell lines.
