Cosmetics: China considers relaxing animal test requirements Featured

China is considering changing regulations to allow the sale of cosmetics that not have been previously tested on animals. The aim of this is to open the Chinese market to international companies that have spoken out against animal testing.

From June of next year it should be possible to introduce "non-specialised cosmetics" such as shampoos, soaps or nail products to the market without prior animal studies. According to the proposal, non-specialised cosmetics made in China need no longer be tested on animals for toxicological risk and safety evaluation.

However, imported cosmetics and all kinds of specialised cosmetics (such as sun creams, deodorants, skin bleaches and hair dyes) would remain unaffected by the changes and would still need to be tested on animals.
