Head of Merck speaks out in favor of animal-free methods Featured

According to the German Press Agency (dpa), head of the Darmstadt-based Dax company Merck, Belén Garijo, wants to significantly reduce the number of animal tests for the development and product safety of drugs and chemicals in the coming years.

Alternative methods, such as tests on cell cultures in the laboratory, could provide similarly reliable data on product safety as animal tests. The task now is to convince the regulatory authorities of the benefits of these methods. In Canada and the United States, she said, this has already been achieved to some extent.
