London Hospital given approval to conduct stem cell trial on humans Featured

In Europe’s first human embryonic stem cell trial, surgeons have been given permission to implant embryonic stem cells into patients suffering from Stargardt’s disease, an incurable eye disease.

Surgeons at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital will inject the cells into the eyes of 12 patients, according to a speaker of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), the US biotechnology company running the trial.

ACT conducted a first trial in the United States in November 2010, with two patients from the United States taking part. “We’re very pleased with the results so far. We’re in the process of scheduling the next two patients for each of the two (US) trials,” Bob Lanza, ACT’s chief scientific officer, said.
