EU committees stop reduction of European research funding Featured

The plans of the European Commission to cut the European research program "Horizon 2020" by around 2.7 billion euros have been interrupted. On 20th of April, the budgetary and the economic committee as well as the transport and industry committee have voted against the proposed reduction of the European Research Framework Programme "Horizon 2020".

It was planned to redeploy the released 2.7 billion euros in oder to support the new "European Fund for Strategic Investments" (EFSI). With this fund, private investment should be mobilized thus boosting the economy in the euro zone. So far the EU Council of Ministers and the German Federal Government have supported these plans to the European Commission. This would have weakened in all probability, the European higher education funding, as feared, several European higher education conferences.

A coalition of several European higher education conferences, including France, Britain, the Netherlands and Germany, warned against the consequences of the research funding cut for the EU-funded project "Horizon 2020'. The initiators were afraid that the cuts be will to the detriment of education, research and innovation and, especially, that the universities will not be considered.
