Brussels: European Parliament stops reduction of research funding Featured

On 22 October, the European Parliament recommended making no cuts to research and development funding and providing more funding instead. The European Council and the European Parliament must reach an agreement on a common EU draft budget for 2015 by November this year.

According to a press release by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), the European Parliament recommends 190.5 million euros in further investments for small and medium-sized enterprises, research and education instead of cuts.

The European heads of government, Germany first and foremost, had called for a unilateral research budget reduction to the tune of one billion euros, which also would have lead to austerity measures in the EU project Horizon 2020. The Council of Ministers adopted its official position on the EU budget on 2 September. Compared with the Commission’s proposal, the EU heads of state and government wanted to reduce appropriations for commitments by 522 million to 145.08 billion euros.

University politicians and science representatives had warned against a reduction of research funding.
