The award was created in 2008 to recognise entrepreneurship at academic institutions. The Academic Enterprise Award consists of individual awards in three different categories: the Green Award for green Technologies, The ICT Award for information and communication technology and the Life Sciences Award.
Jan Lichtenberg and Melanie Aregger received the award in the category “Life Sciences” for their basic science work at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The innovative animal-free 3D cell cultures for which the Swiss company InSphero AG is known is based on this work. Insphero’s customers include the fifteen foremost concerns in the field of chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Amongst the runners-up was Uwe Marx from the Technical University of Berlin with his company TissUse, which works on the development of organ-on-a-chip systems.
