TigerShark Science: New human skin models covering all skin layers Featured

TigerShark Science is a start-up currently being founded by the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research ISC, based in Würzburg. The scientists want to significantly reduce animal testing with their skin models.

The start-up has developed realistic skin models for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries that replicate all three skin layers - epidermis, dermis and hypodermis - with fat cells. These models are suitable for testing drugs and their side effects as well as for researching hair growth, for example. They have an organoid shape and contain sebaceous glands and hair.

The skin model is currently being further developed to include immune cells and blood vessels. Tumor models are also to be offered.
