A new report published inthe journal  Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (ATLA) identifies the limitations of animal experiments to do research on type 2 diabetes mellitus and proposes human-based research which can improve translation to human medicine.
 
Once again, nominations are now possible for the 2018  Lush Prize, a global initiative, animal-free toxicology and research. Awards are available as ususal in the five categories Science, Young Researchers, Training, Public Awareness and Lobbying. The prize is worth £350,000 at total.
 

PISC: Early Career Scientist Award

The PETA International Science Consortium (PISC) announced an award to enable an early-career scientist to attend the 20th International Congress on In Vitro Toxicology (ESTIV2018).
 
The Animal Free Research UK Summer Studentship & Summer Fellowship schemes have been established to assist undergraduate or recently graduated students in gaining practical animal-replacement research experience by working in a laboratory environment.
 

MIT develops 10-organ platform

Researchers at Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston have developed a 10-organ chip platform with which they come closer to the goal of simulating the 10 most important human organs on the chip in a miniature format.
 
American scientists led by Prof. Han Seok Ko from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, have found a genetic mutation that may be responsible for the development of Parkinson's disease and plaque development in the brain.

The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA) announces a call for submissions for its 2018 3Rs Science Prize.
 
Prof. Maike Windbergs is working at the Buchmann Institute of Molecular Life Sciences, Frankfurt, since February 2017. Using three-dimensional skin models she investigates effects of drugs on the skin. For her ground-breaking work on the design and testing of new drugs, she was honoured  with the "Research Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Pharmaceutical Sciences 2018".

The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has announced the Animal Protection Research Award. It is endowed with a total of euros 25,000.
 
EBiSC is the first European bank for human induced pluripotent stem cells, gained from healthy volunteers as well as from patients suffering from various hereditary diseases. The cell bank offers 795 human cell lines, another 240 will be available shortly.
